Like any competitive activity wrestling is a sport that thrives on information and memory. Wrestlers size each other up before a match; they compare seeds on wall charts at tournaments, and they battle each other all year to get to a state championship at the end of the year which will leave no dispute that for this year, at this weight one wrestler was the best. Forgotten often is the long history of wrestling in Maryland and the tradition of the tournament and the names of the wrestlers and teams who have ended the season on top.
This site is a small attempt to remember those wrestlers who were champions but that now, in an age when it is hard to remember what happened last year let alone twenty years ago, have been forgotten. If they receive some more belated recognition for their accomplishments so much the better.
The site may also be a service to team members, or coaches who are interested in the wrestling history of their school. A coach may not be aware of the past accomplishments of the team, or the names of the wrestlers of distinction who preceded him, and he can find here names for this years team to emulate.
For others who read the site please post comments after the entries if you remember some match or circumstance particularly vividly. While box-scores may provide a starting point nothing brings a notable wrestler or match back like a story or anecdote about them.
I am updating this years events as they occur. Check out the page 2009 Season for tournament results and county championships.
