I know this is a Maryland site. But I thought I would provide a list of wrestlers I remember from my old Wheaton Boys Club days that were pretty amazing DC area wrestlers. I am pretty sure that many (if not all of them won the Virgina State Championships). They were key opponents of many of the fantastic wrestlers listed on this site.

Derek Donnolly
Donnie McFadder
Bobby Desorno (sp?)
Mike Harrigan (St. Johns)
Sean Harrigan (St. Johns)
Eric Metcalf? This is the wrong last name, but this guy won the VA States a couple of times.
Kirk Crawford was very good wrestler too.

Does anybody remember some of those old Beltway tournaments?

Man were they packed with talent. I recall one bracket when I was 9 or 10 years old that had David Marini, Mike Harrigan, Donnie Mcfadder, Derek Donnolly, Lenny Bernstein, I "think" Joey Depaul (Bowie) was in that bracket too. I'm pretty sure I lost (as I always did) to Donny Mcfadder. He used dive straight forward with his head and knock people out. I think I still have brain damage from that guy :)

This was pre-Stanley Proctor I am not mistaken. He came into wresting later if I recall...not sure though.

Anyway, thoroughly enjoying this site.

Help! I'm trying to remember how they determined who went to the Maryland States AAA in the early 1980's?

I wrestled for Churchilll H.S. from 1979-1981. I was decent, but definitely not great. I didn't start the sport until 10th grade. I had a decent record my senior year at 112. I was seeded second in the region but was knocked out at some point (usually by a Perry or Paint Branch wrestler!).
I remember that I was called up as an alternate to states when a wrestler from Rockville became sick (Palmer?). But then he recovered so I never went to the "show". My question is that why was I an alternate? Did the top 3 or 4 go from each region?

BTW, I learned my lesson and started my sons wrestling much earlier. My oldest boy was second in VA for middle school, and just took 5th in the northern region of VA. as a freshman! He still gives his old man shit for not making it to states! He will be an alternate this year, but has 3 more years to make it!

Thanks guys!

I remember all of those wrestlers from Virginia. Donnie actually began his wrestling at Bowie (that is when I first ran into him....literally). Then I recall he moved on to Carderrock (sp?). Mike and Sean Harrigan were both Wheaton Generals prior to St. John's. Mike I think was a St. Albans Champ under Mr. Disorno at St. John's. Derreck Donnolly was an amazing wrestler who I had battles with over the course of many years as well. I ended up as an assistant coach with him one year at Gonzaga. Eric Metcalf was a Carderrock guy too. I believe he was a 4 time State Champ in VA..not sure though. And Kirk Crawford, he and his dad pretty much created the Wheaton Boys Club Wrestling program. Kirk was far more talented than his record. I know he was a state champ when he wrestled for the Generals.

As far as that bracket you referred to, add that kid from Kettering who was amazing (really blonde hair), Mike Wittenburg, and yours truly. I think Marini won that tournament. Those Beltway tournament were classic!

Joey Depaul was actually a fraternity brother of mine at Maryland. The intramural wrestling tournaments were like the old Beltway tournmanents, packed with names like Beall Brothers and the like...only with the fresh sent of hangovers around :)
