note: This is the first year that the Maryland Public Schools began competing in two state championship tournaments based on school size. The  two largest classes of schools competed in a division called AA-A. The two smallest school classes competed in a division called B-C.

Publics: Baltimore County has no champions in the tournament.

In the AA-A Division Bowie, Paint Branch and Largo dominated. Paint Branch had four finalists and three champions, Bowie had three champions and Largo had two.

In the B-C Division it was the Oakland Mills show as they had three finalists and one champion to edge Francis Scott Key’s two finalists and one champion.

MSA:
St. Paul’s had nine wrestlers in the finals, Mt. St Joe had seven. There were five head to head matchups in the championship and St. Joe won all of them.

It is the 5th consecutive championship for the Mt. St. Joe team. They keep the Lehigh Cup.

Mount St. Joe was losing by 23.5 points entering the championship matches.

Mount St. Joseph had National Prep Champs at 123 (Jordy Binetti), 130 (Greg Peery), 149 (Lou Chiapparelli).
St. Mary’s had a national prep champ at 102 in Chuck Ruland who defeated St. Paul’s Paul Denoncourt in the finals.
St. Pauls had a champion at 159 (Dave Patterson).

Thank you for this wonderful resource. It brings back some great memories.

I have a small request.
I am a St. Paul's wrestler who graduated in 1980 and was a member of the team that tied MSJ for the Lehigh Cup at the MSA tournament that year. Please mention that St. Paul's defeated MSJ in the dual meet, giving St. Paul's its only undeafed season. It was St. Joe's first and only MSA dual-meet loss for some years before and after. Technically St. Paul's was therefore the MSA champion, which at the time was a dual meet title, as I understand it. The tournament was a seperate title, the Lehigh Cup. However, there's no need to bring that up. If only you would mention that St. Paul's beat St. Joe in the regular season, that would be great. Defeating what was probably one of the strongest MSJ teams, including 7 MSA champions, is one of the greatest moments in St. Paul's athletics. The St.Paul's team was favored to win the dual meet, and after doing so, was expected to take the tournament too. That MSJ came back to tie the tournament really makes that season especaially memorable, as both teams truly shone that year.
